Clean, Fix and Restore Scratched DVDs with Pledge

Ever have a DVD from Netflix or one in your personal collection that either stops half-way-through or doesn't play at all? Well, here's a tried and proven solution that's simple and cheap.

First, clean the DVD with some mild soap and water.

Your DVD may have some fingerprints or unknown goo on the surface that some lukewarm water and soap will take right off. Be sure to dry the DVD completely with a soft cloth. Using a paper towel or tissue is NOT recommended.

Second, get the Pledge out.

Yes, household Pledge or similar wax or non-wax dusting product that you would use to shine a wooden table. The idea is that the product will fill in some of the minor scratches on the disc surface that impeded the laser in the DVD player from reading it. Hold the disc about a foot or less from the Pledge sprayer and give the whole side a good coating. Wait 5 - 10 seconds then buff the DVD with a very soft cloth. Then repeat.

That's it. Simple. It won't work for very damaged, deep scratched DVDs but it will restore most DVDs with minor surface imperfections to a playable state.
